The Challenge

“How to become a backpacker?”

I have heard this question from some of my friends who are passionate to be more adventurists and imagined themselves become a world backpack traveler one day, but they can not find the reliable resources which match to their needs and help them in this journey.

So I decided to help them!

Problem Statement

“How might we help beginner advanturists have access to all data they need to start their backpack journey?”

Final Solution

Comprehensive

Provide users all the useful information and gears in one place.

Personalized

Help users to plan based on their likes, skills, and needs.

Interactive

Let users learn skills in an easy and enjoyable way.

Research Proccess

Quantitative User Research

The proportion of young travellers identifying as backpackers has declined since 2002.

The proportion of backpackers using hostels has decreased between 2002 and 2017 as alternative forms of accommodation, such as Airbnb, became available.

Backpacker trip lengths have fallen over time, along with the number of in-destination activities undertaken during the trip.

Total trip spend of backpackers has remained fairly stable since 2007, hovering between 3,200 – 3,400 euros.

User Survay

To understand better the potential user and main problems while they backpack traveling, I conducted a user survey of users who recently had backpacking experience.

Usability Testing and Iteration

Issue:

Testers prefer to have “multiple options” and decided by themselves to purchase.

Some testers “do not check the Homepage” to understand how the service works.

Solution:

Added “names as a tag line” to each option.

Added “how it works” infographic to this page for more clarification.

Issue:

Testers believed the “list of things to do” is not intuitive & took to much space.

Testers wanted the “destination info” to be more interactive and not just a paragraph.

Solution:

Changed to a horizontally scrollable list & prioritize to take less space.

Changed the paragraph to taglines with interactive links.

Issue:

Testers think the list order is not an interactive experience to show tips.

Solution:

Changed the list to a more intuitive layout and defined better filters.

Final Design

User can purchase a kit on the website and use the code to activate an account on app.

After receiving the Kit, the user will scan the code with the app and receives the content which based on purchased kit level.

After receiving the Kit, the user will scan the code with the app and receives the content which based on purchased kit level.

User is able to find and learn about new destinations and skills in an easy way.

Challenges and What I learned

Since I was designing a product which associate with two platforms and one tangible product, the design process of this project was much challenging for me compare to other projects. I needed to be consistent with user interface design through the website and app while creating interactive experiences to connect them and make the service works.
Moreover, I didn't have much time to do concept testing because of a lack of time. If I have more time, I want to do more user testing. Also, I want to narrow down the project and dive deeper into one particular feature.
